School me. 72 kona jet boat

A year ago I inherited my grandfather's 1972 kona jet boat. He bought the boat in 1983 with out a motor. I believe he had it together and in the water in the late 1980s. This is the boat of my childhood. Needless to say I'm one excited boat owner. However I don't know much about the boat. Just stories as a kid and what my grandfather would tell all the grandkids.

Here is what I do know. It has an Olds 455 and a Berkley pump with jet o vator. At some point the boat was painted in its life.

The story we were always told is that the boat originally came with a 352? Or 354 blown hemi. My grandfather always wanted to put that motor back in it. But never found one to do it. I doubt that would be cost effective today. One can dream though.

So the boat resides in Michigan. I have permanent storage for it. I live in NC, but with my job I get to play with it for a few weeks during the summer. So I will pick a small project for it each time I go to MI. This year was just going over it and seeing what needs attention.

The boat was run this 4th of July for the first time in 4 years. When I got it I changed fluids in the motor and checked hoses and fittings. Boat ran great all week.

Can you tell me more about the boat and what I should expect from it.

Trying to up load photos from my phone is more challenging than I thought.. I'll update this with pictures soon!

Re: School me. 72 kona jet boat

    Welcome.
My '76 Makai is a great hull. They're tougher than the hubs of hell! lol
When I bought mine I heard stories about the previous two owners doing things like jumping wakes with it and flat spinning it up onto the beach! So, needless to say, I checked the bottom for damage and nada. Not even any spider cracks. These hulls are what's called a heavy meadium lay up. When I tore mine apart for paint about 11 years ago I noticed that the hull was about 3/8" thick in most places. Couple that with the secondary floor and floatation that's under it and you've got one tough hull.

Personally I've never heard of the Kona's coming from the factory with any MOPAR motors in them, and certainly not with any FE Ford engines like the 352/360/390's. But I may be wrong. Most of them (I think) had either the 460" Ford, 455" Olds or the 454" Chevy. Again, I may be wrong.

Thanks for all the kind words. Hopefully I can make this picture thing work. Honestly just trying to remember everything that was said about the boat and trying to figure out what was truth and what was B.S. may deem more difficult than I thought.

I will saw that the boat could use some love in the looks department. The paint and everything isn't the prettiest. I am sure that I don't want to undertake that project right now.

So hopefully I can get the pictures to work and some of you gurus can help me identify what I have going on here....

Re: School me. 72 kona jet boat

I think I have it figured out now. The boat has a cool old school feeling that I will be keeping....

So guys what can you tell me about the pump?

The motor I know is a 455 olds. No idea what has been to it. Pretty sure it wasn't balanced. Over the week we put GPS on the boat and it ran 54 mph back to back at 5200 rpms. From what I read I shouldn't run the motor that high of an RPM. But honestly there was more in it. The boat doesn't like full throttle. It chokes out and wants to die at WOT.

Anything else I need to know? I will try to add some more pictures of what I have. Or if there is something you want to see to help identify anything please tell me!

    Thanks again!

Oh... there should be a metal plate just inside of the transom to ID the pump. Looks like someone already added the diverter! Great score.

What would the ID be? Will it look like a serial number? Thanks for the kind words guys. Like I said I'm super excited about it.
