Im a ways off from doing this, but i could really use some input so i can start planning. I need input on building my 454. This is my first motor build and any input would be helpful. Should i try to buy an already built motor, or buy a crate long block and build it up from there? what kind of components should i put in it? I would love 600hp, but i don't know what is realistic.

Start a thread in the engines section and all those Cheb nuts will spend your money faster than a wife planning a wedding! :)

    HI Grant,
Welcome to the madness! You may want t consider a SBC with a 383 Stroker kit? You'll get way more power to weight ratio(400 Hp +)
    Something to think about..Dean

Here we go again with the no replacement for displacement discussion Dean. :) Grant, jet drives lose about 30% of crank HP at the drive. That being said a bigger displacement motor can more easily match the desired peak RPM to torque ratio needed to push a boat through water.

I'm with Jason on this. Go with a nice 454. Find a good machine shop that knows marine engines.

Buy an old motor home with a 454 in it.
