    Balsa vs plywood

Wondering if there are any charts showing the strength of balsa core vs plywood. I haven't found anything. Right now my tunnel dragster has 3/8 plywood core. I'm going to replace it with balsa and I'm not sure what thickness to use.

Question with a question.....do you already no weight of hull before repairs (IE is it a potatoe chip lay up, medium lay up or lake lay up) and what are you final plans for her? Make sure to join the NUTTZ page on here, maybe some one from Northern Utah will finally float a SWTD! :)

Not sure on the weight of the hull. Roger is thinking its a lighter layup. My plans are just a lake hotrod something that's going to hold up to some chop. The motor will be roughly 700hp 520 stroker for now.

Bill at Southwind Boats or Wolfie can probably give you the best advice on that little gem, congrats on the new family member!

    Re: Balsa vs plywood

I could easily be wrong.....but I think the strength is in the glass. Other than bulkheads and decorative flooring and stringers....I have never had a boat with wood.

The rigidity is in the tunnels I believe. My cousin's kid had wood and Doug has balsa I believe. If done right, the balsa looks great.

I've heard that too. Just need to know if 3/8 balsa is as strong or stronger than 3/8 plywood. I'm guessing anywhere that sells balsa may know
