Folsom Lake is a reservoir located northeast of Sacramento behind Folsom Dam along the American River. The lake and dam were formed in 1955 as part of the Folsom Project which aims to control flood water, provide hydro electricity, irrigation water, and drinking water to the region. Folsom Lake has held hydroplane racing in the past. In 1967, Mike Thomas drove the Miss Budweiser to victory in the Sacramento Cup; the last race held in the city.
Last September, JW Myers and the Peters & May hydroplane took part in a four boat exhibition aimed at gaining support for a possible event in the future. Joining Myers at the exhibition were drivers J Michael Kelly, Brian Perkins and Ryan Mallow. A couple thousand spectators witnessed each driver performing exhibition runs on Folsom Lake. At the time, several fans were hopeful that an actual race could be held in the future including 12 year old Austin Borges. "These boats are big and fast, pretty amazing," said Borges who attended the September Exhibition with his dad.
The Big Wake Weekend most likely will be the season opener for the 2013 Air National Guard H1 Unlimited Series as the series has not conducted a race before the first weekend of June since 2000. H1 Unlimited will release the complete 2013 race schedule later this year.
