Thanks guys, I was able to get the padded side panel off. At first I was too impatient to pull all the staples out (there are probably 400+), but I started down that path and it seemed to be the best way to take everything off in full sections, so that the guy who's replacing it all will have a clear picture of what to do during the re-installation. Regarding the back swimmer bars... as far as I can tell, they are the strongest pieces of metal on the boat, with the exception of maybe the CVX-20 grab rail for front passenger. The swimmer bars don't spin, slide, or rattle, and I've tied the boat down using them for years. They are sunken into a socket on the outer part of the body, and (I think) are inside a wooden receptacle in the engine bay, which are completely glassed over. I can't imagine a pair of screws holding a cleat down is stronger, but I do think a recessed cleat in the right location would be nice to have - I'll look into those. But, wanting to continue mooring to those bars was a secondary point. It's more an aesthetics thing. He asked if he could remove them to glass and paint over the holes, but it will change the look of that area too much for me. I'd still like them to come out before he paints though, so he doesn't have to tape the bar off.

an Olds engine plays by a different set of rules is all, they can be made, to be very reliable, with quite a bit of horsepower. However High RPM's often hurt the BBO. Most people don't remember, this was a luxury car engine. They rarely saw a spirited run of 4,000 rpm for no longer than 1/2 mile. In a boat, with a worn pump, rpm's can easily exceed over 5,000 rpm's.

Had an Oldsmobile 455 in my Jet boat, and had nothing but problems. Other boat (no name)with same engine blew 3 in 4 years. I have BBC with HEI dist. and alot of money in to it. Now it's got to go. Only thing off 455 is the engine motor mount bracket, which hold to the frame of the boat. I'll give that away if U need. Any one ever hear of Milwaukee Boat Inc?

]Here is a short video, about keeping oil where the pick-up tube needs it. I modified a Milodon Jet Boat pan (which had issues) by merely adding a pair of trap doors, making a new windage tray. I also recommend, a larger diameter, oil pick-up tube and screen, for the oil pump. https://youtu.be/0lBKEZpDGZk

The Oldsmobile, is a great torque monster of an engine, just keep in mind, they don't like sustained full throttle runs.

Your padded side panels are thru bolted to the fiberglass. I cut the old vinyl on my 23 to access the bolt heads

Q1= that bar is really that strong and you’d be better off to buy a cleat to moor with. They make a cleat that recesses into itself for a more flush look, and is made to moor with. Those rear bars are only for swimmers to pull themselves up on the transom area, as for the short bars behind the drivers, one end should(?) have a small tab tack welded, and the other end is glassed over. It was for a passenger grab handle. Both add value and style specific to the Carlson unique designs. But at the end of the day, it’s your boat, your decision....Dean IMHO...

I make custom Stainless steel muffler to fix the “loud as heck” non-sense!!! Also GLM makes OEM all aluminum exhaust manifold and everything to do a through transom dump, and retain your ‘Stealthy’ look. I ran long tips on mine with my mufflers, sound awesome, just didn’t piss off Mr. Ward, gotta keep the peace... helped to him get a new motor though.... Two new styles of end caps now!!!

I ran some for a bit. They were quite a bit quieter than my ot's especially at idle. I didnt reroute my dump line for my motor to the collectors and melted both rubber hoses off....that was a pucker moment. Lucky I didnt sink. The one thing I didnt like is being able to glance back and see if my headers were or werent getting injected. They are kind of a pain in comparison to ot's when R+R ING the motor.
