That's how I feel and I have to jump into cold water before I walk on the beach sometimes just because.

On 2 separate occasions with 2 very different boats. I have had the tube break off clean at the casting. Vibration and poor mounting of the tube causes them to crack. I then used a bolt with some Teflon tape to act as a sort of plug. I kept the dipstick along with the broken tube. When I needed to check the oil I'd pull the bolt/plug and set in the dip stick. Once done the bolt would go back in. This is an easy solution to a common problem. But you need to be sure the bottom section of the tube still has enough flare to prevent falling into the pan. If the bottom section is not present, assume it fell into the pan and remove the pan to find it.

I don't think it broke off, I'm just not sure why it's got a threaded bolt capping off the entry. I have to look into it a little more. It also has a different pan than the usual 454. Again I thank you all for your help & if any more ideas are out there they will be welcomed!

Its been a long road....but I am hoping to be water ready by sunday. I bolted a new starter on last night....but it was too late/dark to check it for clearance. Need to fab up a new floater bar and get creative with some trailer fenders. A couple of my friends are talking about deer creek sunday. I think I would rather hit utah lake even though deer creek is 6 min from my house. I am hoping to make a 90 mph fly by and think I may get some unwanted attention at deer creek. Anyone else going out this weekend??

I had an olds in a k boat that the dipstick tube broke off. I shortened the "Stick" and made a mark after I knew I had the right amount of oil in it. Worked pretty good until the bottom half of the tube dropped into the bottom end and took out a piston skirt. Hind sight is 20/20.....needless to say i wish I would have pulled the motor and fixed it right to begin with.

The dipstick has a tube that extends the "hole" the dipstick goes into and out of. Mine sounds like it is just like yours.

The hole is capped & the "neck" to the block is only about an inch or so long. Is there a particular reason on this style boat/454 engine they don't have dipsticks. This is not just a situation where it's "missing" I've heard of a number of these boats w/o one. This capped neck is near the bottom of the block & I'm afraid if a little water is in the bilge a problem could result . I know that most offshore boats etc have the dipstick exiting the top of the block, not the bottom. If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it. Just "buying one" probably isn't the best answer.

You'll have to buy one. Just figure out which side it's on. https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/engine-oil-dipsticks/make/chevrolet/model/v3500/engine-size/7-4l-454/oil-dipstick-location/passenger-side :zdrool:

** Quick Update ** We are still working on the engine rebuild. Holy cow,how the time slips by!! We have the short block assembled, .030 overbore, Keith Black pistons, Scat H Beam Rods and ARB bolts. Working on ordering a Kaase oil pump, cm kit just arrived and will go in soon. After two years, I finally concluded that I would likely not finish the port job on my own. Dropped the heads off at a local guru's shop last week. I really would like to get the boat back in the water this summer.

Like Kreg was saying, how the pump is set up also is taken into consideration. A lot of people think that the pump all the way up will give you top speed. In my 21' cruiser, that was the case. The higher the bow rose, the faster she would run. The angle of your pump and nozzle may be different from mine. You might have to play with trim to see where you are. If your trim is all the way up and it's actually pushing the stern down, you're losing speed. Or maybe yours isn't trimming enough. Might need to put some wedge into it. Some of the drag boat guys trim to 3/4 to get the right trim. But then a lot of them are running wedges and droops. But as long as you're having fun with it!!!

If you pay close attention to detail, you can do it yourself. Just make sure that you gap the impeller and wear ring correctly. Other than that, it's straight forward. That being said, I had Tommy at JBP do the one in my Eliminator just because I didn't trust myself.
