I would talk with cp again, explain your symptoms and vids are always helpful. Like a before and after way to document the progress. They should be able to set you with a long enough ride plate. Tabs would work. But way overkill and 3X the cost and headache to install. An adjustable ride plate will make all the difference in the world. How much of a droop did you go? 4"??? Dean

Thankyou for response. Do you have a good source for trim tabs to help eliminate the porpusing ? And angles. I am tool and die from back ( When within a thou is close enough LOL) New to Jet boat world and hooked for sure. I want to have this old girl run down lake sporting the best roost she can as flat as she can. Rick from CP walked me through the Berkeley rebuild and was very patient LOL. Do you think try trim tabs and ride plate? Like I said not worried about top end speed just flat and nice roost. I will leave top end up to my girl (Plenty there LOL) Thanks so much That pic it was porpussing like crazy My girl thought she was going to come out of the boat (and not in a good way) Thanks again. PLEASE HELP

AG6 replied to a thread Porpusing in Vintage Jet Boats only
Hi Dave, Porpoising is a very simple thing to understand. It is caused when the hull of the boat is at the Apex, and trying to 'climb out of the hole' or over the crest of the wave of water its on, if you will. Another words, the boat is at a teetering point(like a see-saw) and the balanced is being upset. Not enough drag to hold down the nose, when you lift the bow(bring the nozzle up) so it starts to teeter up and down. One excellent way to correct this, is the use of a "Ride Plate" under the bowl of your pump. This in effect tricks the hull in to thinking its longer than it is, and creates enough surface drag (or parasitic drag) to actually compensate for this bouncing. Most of the Jet boat guys use these for this reason, and you'll notice that you may also pick up a few MPH and better handling as well. CP, PJB and many of the aftermarket boat part house carry these, but I'd recommend you take the boat with you and some current video of how its reacting. This will give these folks the info they are going to ask for, to help you select a ride plate. Almost all boats have this issue. I/O's (like my Biesemeyer) has it too, I just use trim tabs to correct it. Good luck, Hope this all helped. Dean.

I recently rebuilt Berkeley split bowl and added droop and place diverter. With trim all the way down is great. But I really want awesome rooster and not to worried if it cost the 460 a couple mph. But at any speed when I Change position with the manual it porpuses. The further I go the more I watch video of you guys cruising looking flat and have awesome roost. PLEASE HELP 20 foot Sleek craft Streaker. 460 Approx 400-425HP est.

I may be picking up a 'new' Glastron/Carlson tomorrow; the unicorn ... pegasus, the mythical creature of Carlsons. Momma says something will have to go .... Maybe the jetskis .... maybe the CV-23. If I bring home the new float and decide to let the CV-23 go, I'll want to throw a decent marine 460 in it and keep the 466 I built .... maybe for the Falcon, maybe for the 55/56 Chevy I've always wanted to build with Ford running gear & Ford emblems! :4_6_100::character0029: Anyone have a decent, running 460 marine engine? I won't just slam a truck motor in it and send it on its way.

Are your heads oval or rectangular port?? If you take a peak at an impeller hp chart......think you will answer your own question as far as single vs dual plane. Edit...I agree also with who ever posted needs to match your cam also.....and heads, compression ratio ect. MOST I think are better off with a single plane. The dart on I just glanced at said something like 3500-8500 rs The hp chart I just looked at has about 130 hp to get an A cut impy to 3500 r's Should be a cake walk for either a single or a dual plane in a 454......the single SHOULD perform better above 3500....if everything else is copacetic.

Once again thanks for the information. I think your suggestion of pulling the pan is a good one just to know for sure if any part of it has dropped in.

Brian- What time will you be leaving on the 27th? SacsTC are thinking about coming up for the day to meet everyone. We won't have the boat but we thought we would check into your space with our RV on Tuesday AM. I know he hopes to meet everyone that he has communicated with-including Red-Eye and 78 Tahiti. We are looking forward to meeting the gang!

On 2 separate occasions with 2 very different boats. I have had the tube break off clean at the casting. Vibration and poor mounting of the tube causes them to crack. I then used a bolt with some Teflon tape to act as a sort of plug. I kept the dipstick along with the broken tube. When I needed to check the oil I'd pull the bolt/plug and set in the dip stick. Once done the bolt would go back in. This is an easy solution to a common problem. But you need to be sure the bottom section of the tube still has enough flare to prevent falling into the pan. If the bottom section is not present, assume it fell into the pan and remove the pan to find it.

I don't think it broke off, I'm just not sure why it's got a threaded bolt capping off the entry. I have to look into it a little more. It also has a different pan than the usual 454. Again I thank you all for your help & if any more ideas are out there they will be welcomed!

Its been a long road....but I am hoping to be water ready by sunday. I bolted a new starter on last night....but it was too late/dark to check it for clearance. Need to fab up a new floater bar and get creative with some trailer fenders. A couple of my friends are talking about deer creek sunday. I think I would rather hit utah lake even though deer creek is 6 min from my house. I am hoping to make a 90 mph fly by and think I may get some unwanted attention at deer creek. Anyone else going out this weekend??

I had an olds in a k boat that the dipstick tube broke off. I shortened the "Stick" and made a mark after I knew I had the right amount of oil in it. Worked pretty good until the bottom half of the tube dropped into the bottom end and took out a piston skirt. Hind sight is 20/20.....needless to say i wish I would have pulled the motor and fixed it right to begin with.

The dipstick has a tube that extends the "hole" the dipstick goes into and out of. Mine sounds like it is just like yours.

The hole is capped & the "neck" to the block is only about an inch or so long. Is there a particular reason on this style boat/454 engine they don't have dipsticks. This is not just a situation where it's "missing" I've heard of a number of these boats w/o one. This capped neck is near the bottom of the block & I'm afraid if a little water is in the bilge a problem could result . I know that most offshore boats etc have the dipstick exiting the top of the block, not the bottom. If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it. Just "buying one" probably isn't the best answer.

You'll have to buy one. Just figure out which side it's on. https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/engine-oil-dipsticks/make/chevrolet/model/v3500/engine-size/7-4l-454/oil-dipstick-location/passenger-side :zdrool:
